The tourist inflow to the picturesque Sikkim has soared by 60 per cent in the first two months of this year for the corresponding period last year, with 60,925 visitors visiting the state.

The Himalayan State, famous for its pristine natural landscape like snow-capped mountains and lakes, received 27,834 and 33,091 tourists in January and February 2009 respectively against 18,122 and 20,430 in the same months last year, as per the data made available by the state tourism department.

Domestic tourists, mostly from West Bengal and Southern states, comprised the bulk of the tourist inflow. Only 1749 - 696 in January and 1053 in February - foreign tourists visited the state. Officials here attributed the decline in foreign tourists to the global economic slowdown and to the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Following the attacks last year, several countries have issued advisories to their nationals cautioning them against visiting India. The economic and security-related concerns were bound to subside in the time to come and the same would be reflected on the tourism sector, the officials said.
